Abstract: Through analyzing the problem of the present map symbol sharing technology in GIS，a sharing method of map symbol in GIS based on Symbol Encoding complementation（SE） is put forward.Common map symbol system，including SE symbol data models，symbol editors and symbol draw engine，will transform international map symbol standards into a practical map symbol sharing method.And with the method，when sharing the geographic spatial data，can realize the sharing of the same map symbol library both in various GIS software and on the Internet.
